This year’s ICMR-IITKGP MedTech Internship Program gets the support of IIM-A. The 16 interns are drawn from IITKGP, IIM-A and medical institutes like AIIMS New Delhi, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Bhubaneswar etc. The orientation of the interns at IITKGP was held during May 14-18, 2018. In the preceding week, the interns were at RMRC, Bhubaneswar, an ICMR centre. There, they were primarily engaged in field visits to get acquainted with primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services. There were interactions with experts from Welcome Trust-DBT alliance and successful entrepreneurs.
The IITKGP part of the orientation started with a welcome address by Dean, Post Graduate Studies & Research, IIT Kharagpur. This was followed by a workshop conducted by Dr. Prashant Jha of Stanford-India Biodesign Program. The lessons were imparted in a witty manner and it was learning-by-doing all the way. There was a hands on session at the end. The interns thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and immensely benefited from it. A significant part of the IITKGP-stay of the interns included visits to select laboratories of Dept. of Electronics & ECE, Dept. of Mechanical Engg., Dept. of Biotechnology, Dept. of Chemistry and School of Medical Science & Technology. The technology immersion aspect at lab. level was to complement other inputs the interns received. Through group study and discussions (16 interns were divided in 4 teams, mixed disciplines) the interns identified a list of problems and possible solutions at coarse level and each team dug deeper for 2-3 solutions. These and their analytical insights to address various aspects of Parkinson Disease related problem (from the invited lecture of Dr. Sanjay Pandey, Professor of Neurology, GBPIPMER, New Delhi) were evaluated by a 4 member panel and the panelists provided them valuable feedback. On two succeeding days, special lectures were arranged for the interns on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) with emphasis on progress made in healthcare technology related IPs. The concluding day had documentation work and report submission. That day, they also participated in the poster session organized by the research scholars of Dept. of Electronics & ECE and had a brief round table with them.
From IITKGP, the interns proceed to IIM-A for their stint at the Centre for Management of Health Services (CMHS). After that, they will join the designated lab.s and work under respective mentors for five weeks now and, for one more year if they can make it to the next stage. Here are few pictures from their orientation at IITKGP.
